Nothing says “summer” like the smell of brats on the grill.

I like to use a two-step method when making brats. First simmer and then grill. Simmering the brats is key because it add flavor, moisture and ensure that the brats are fully cooked. In this family friendly recipe, I add apple juice instead of beer – you can always serve beer on the side for the adults. The apple juice adds a lot of flavor so use a good quality apple juice like Martinelli’s. I also like to add a full sliced Vidalia onion. All you need to do is cook the brats on the stove and let them simmer for a 10-15 minutes to ensure that they are cooked. Then finish on an outdoor grill. With this method, you won’t have to worry about burned on the outside raw on the inside brats.

How to Make Grilled Brats

Place the brats side by side in a saucepan. Fill with enough water to cover the brats by at least an inch. Add ½ cup of apple juice and 1 sliced onion. A note about the onions: Don’t slice the onions too thin or you will have trouble with them sticking to the brats when you remove them from the pot.Turn on the heat to medium. Once the water starts boiling, cover and reduce the heat. Simmer the brats for 10 to 15 minutes.

Use tongs to remove the brats to a dish.

In the meantime, preheat an outdoor grill to medium (450F). When preheated, place the brats on the grill. Use large tongs to turn from time to time until well brown. About 10 minutes.

Remove the brats to a plate. Serve hot with brat buns, ketchup, mustard and relish.

You can also serve with grilled onions.

Their high sugar content helps them caramelize better. Heat in a pan with a combination of butter and olive oil. Start with one tablespoon of butter and one tablespoon of olive oil. Add one more tablespoon of butter if needed. Season to taste.
